WB36 is a fine-grain ferritic steel with 0.5% to 0.8% copper added and precipitated to deliver high strength and high toughness. At temperatures up to 600°C, its strength matches STPA28, a common Japanese steel, and reaches nearly twice that of conventional carbon steels.
This grade is mainly used in high-pressure, medium-temperature feedwater lines (close to 400 °C).
WB36 exhibits excellent high-strength properties up to 450 °C. The reduced weight of the feedwater piping components compared with conventional carbon steel allows improved resistance to thermal fatigue and very good heat transfer.

WB36 is a bainitic Ni-Cu-Mo steel micro-alloyed with niobium, meeting German standards DIN WB36. It is also designated as 15NiCuMoNb5-6-4 per EN 10216-2, ASTM A213 T36, and ASTM A335 P36.
First developed by the German Mannesmann Company, WB36 seamless steel pipe is produced through hot-finished or cold-finished processes depending on the application. Each pipe undergoes flattening, hydrostatic, or nondestructive electric testing to verify compliance with requirements.
Thanks to its high strength, WB36 pipe handles high-pressure pipelines at temperatures up to 500°C. It is widely used in supercritical boiler components - steam drums, steam separators, headers, steam generators, and steam piping - as well as high-temperature and high-pressure water systems in nuclear power equipment.
WB36 (15NiCuMoNb5) is a low-alloy, high-strength steel formulated for superior performance under demanding conditions. Its composition - aluminum, carbon, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon - each plays a specific role in the alloy's enhanced attributes.
The production process of WB36 alloy steel pipes is extremely rigorous to ensure that they achieve the required structural and mechanical properties. From selecting high-quality raw materials to employing advanced heat treatment technology, every step is strictly controlled to ultimately guarantee the uniformity and consistency of the product.
WB36 alloy steel offers good weldability, but the process requires careful control to prevent hot cracking and cold cracking. Standard practice includes preheating to 150–200°C, followed by post-weld heat treatment at 590–610°C to relieve residual stresses and maintain ductility in the heat-affected zone.
The versatility of WB36 alloy steel pipes extends to applications requiring high strength and resistance to corrosion. They are extensively used in:
Every WB36 alloy steel pipe is subject to rigorous quality control across the manufacturing and supply chain. Non-destructive testing - ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, and radiographic testing - verifies the integrity of each pipe and ensures it is defect-free.
15NiCuMoNb5 is a high-temperature alloy steel that is used to make: Boiler tubes, Heat exchangers, Pressure vessels.
WB36 alloy steel pipes, also designated as 15NiCuMoNb5, 1.6368, A335 P36, or Diwa373, are low-alloy steels containing small amounts of molybdenum, nickel, and copper. These alloying elements enhance mechanical properties at high temperatures, improving resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and deformation while delivering high strength and excellent creep resistance.
With strong mechanical properties and reliable welding characteristics, WB36 pipes are a preferred choice in power generation and petrochemical industries for high-pressure and high-temperature applications - including boiler tubes, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels. Its performance depends on factors such as heat treatment and processing conditions, which are tailored to the specific requirements of each critical application where high-temperature performance and corrosion resistance are essential.
